In the present volume, the author gives an analytical and critical account of the political history of early modern India from A D 1707 to 1813. The study begins with the death of Aurangzeb, the last imperial ruler of the Mughal Dynasty, and carries the story of political and military developments through the eighteenth century, which comprises `an epoch of transition' from the medieval to the modern period of Indian history. The narrative shatters the contention of contemporary European writers that it was `the dark age' of Indian history, characterized by `political anarchy and misgovernment', until the British brought it under their sway. The main thesis of the author is that the political developments of the period were marked by two distinct phases; the first phase, which lasted from 1707 to 1760, saw the rapid disintegration of the Mughal power and its replacement by the Maratha hegemony. Delhi became the hub of Maratha activities from 1752 and fell under their complete control by 1760. The Afghan invader, Ahmad Shah Abdali, gave a serious blow to the Maratha power in the third battle of Panipat (1761), albeit, their Afghan and Mughal adversaries were also ruined within a decade. On the other hand, the Marathas effected phenomenal revival of their power under their fourth Peshwa Madhav Rao (1761-72). Meanwhile, the English traders turned colonialists, after consolidating their hold along the Indian seacoasts and conquest of `Carnatic' and Bengal, challenged the Maratha hegemony. The second phase of developments was thus marked by the struggle for supremacy between these two powers almost exclusively. Nevertheless, for full 31 years after 1772, the Marathas were in absolute control of Delhi, and wielded imperial powers as de facto as well as de jure rulers of the country in the name of the phantom Mughal emperor until they were dislodged from there in 1803. The Marathas were defeated but not yet out by the year 1813. The author makes a judicious use of the contemporary English and Marathi sources and liberally utilizes the intensive researches done by modern historians to portray a compact picture of their findings in an extensive treatment of the subject matter in the form of a text book for the benefit of the degree students of colleges and universities. Historical facts have been reorganized and reinterpreted through clear and illuminating expositions, refreshing characterization of historic personalities, and objective assessment of events and movements. Together with maps, a select bibliography, glossary and an elaborate index, the volume makes a rich contribution to the advancement of modern historical literature.

Lots of info scattered all over the place

This book has TONS of information but good luck finding it.

Man, was I excited to get this book. Finally, a know-how book with enough info to help me build whatever I want and sort through the notation! Right?

Imagine my disappointment when I opened the book expecting to find a chart defining all the terms within the first few pages, and I couldn't find it. Where is it? I start skimming the text and I see those letters with subscripts scattered here and there like annoying gray dandelion balls in the front yard. So I keep flipping backward, expecting to see them defined somewhere. Nope... nope... wait... there's some of them... but where is Q? And what is f_s? Flipping... flipping... and now I'm on the first page in Chapter 0 and I haven't found a definition for Q. He talks about it, but never defines it. So I go for the index. Oh wait... there IS no index. But there is a bunch of annoying advertisements in the back like the car magazines I read every month. So I check the table of contents - finally after a few minutes I find Q defined somewhere around page 24 in Chapter 1, but he mentions it repeatedly before then.

There are two rules I've learned about technical writing:

1) Tell them what you are going to tell them, tell them, and then tell them what you told them.

2) Re-invent the wheel so your readers don't have to.

Vance Dickason must have lost these rules of thumb in the piles of papers he's sure to have on his desk. If he would just spend some time taking more pictures, drawing more basic diagrams, and placing easy to read tables at the early parts of chapters, this book would be fantastic! But in the meantime, be prepared to read for a long time.

Not for Beginners - Some Gems for Enthusiasts and Pro's

Warning: This book is not for beginners. Hard core hobbyists or speaker design professionals may find some useful models, empirical studies and references in this book. For the beginner, the minimum vital data needed to design and build a speaker is interwoven in to a jumble of esoteric empirical tests and computer simulations. For the more experienced speaker builder, the depth of this book is great and the footnote references are very complete. While the breadth is great, the depth of technical explanation for fundamental speaker enclosure modeling physics was a lacking. I guess I need to buy another book or research the footnotes myself.

This book could be a lot better with some solid editing. The writing - for the most part - is clear, but there are sections that are hard to read and there are some errors. The fonts are too small (many of the subscripts are illegible). The graphics are horrible. The book has over 100 frequency domain plots (developed with speaker CAD packages), which are illegible and poorly labeled. Most of the graphics are nowhere near the text.

I give this book two stars because of the breadth and the references, but it's no cookbook. You won't be able to look up a recipe and cook up a speaker.

About the Author
The late George F. Cole was Professor Emeritus of Political Science at the University of Connecticut. He was recognized for outstanding teaching and research and in 1995 was named a Fellow of the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences. A specialist in the administration of criminal justice, he published extensively on such topics as prosecution, courts, and corrections. He developed and directed the graduate corrections program at the University of Connecticut and was a Fellow at the National Institute of Justice (1988). Among his other accomplishments, he was granted two awards under the Fulbright-Hays Program to conduct criminal justice research in England and the former Yugoslavia. He was co-author of several other Cengage Learning/Wadsworth criminal justice titles, including THE AMERICAN SYSTEM OF CRIMINAL JUSTICE, 15th Edition (with Christopher E. Smith and Christina DeJong); AMERICAN CORRECTIONS, 11th Edition (with Todd Clear and Michael Reisig); AMERICAN CORRECTIONS IN BRIEF, 3rd Edition (with Todd Clear, Michael Reisig, and Carolyn Petrosino); and THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM: POLITICS AND POLICIES, 10th Edition (with Marc Gertz).

Christopher E. Smith is Professor of Criminal Justice at Michigan State University (MSU). He earned degrees at Harvard University, the University of Bristol (England), the University of Tennessee, and the University of Connecticut. Trained as a lawyer and social scientist, he is the author of 25 books and more than 100 scholarly articles on law, courts, and criminal justice policy. He has been recognized as an outstanding teacher with MSU's "Teacher-Scholar Award" and "Social Science Alumni Association Outstanding Teaching Award." His other books with Cengage Learning/Wadsworth include THE AMERICAN SYSTEM OF CRIMINAL JUSTICE, 15th Edition (with George Cole and Christina DeJong), LAW AND CONTEMPORARY CORRECTIONS, CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS: MYTHS AND REALITIES, and CRIMINAL PROCEDURE.

Christina DeJong is Associate Professor of Criminal Justice at Michigan State University. She earned her Ph.D. in Criminal Justice and Criminology at the University of Maryland and her B.A. in Sociology from the University of Texas at Austin. Her scholarly research on genocide, recidivism, domestic violence, police-community interactions, and other topics has been published in such journals as Criminology, Justice Quarterly, Feminist Criminology, and The Journal of Family Violence. Her current research focuses on gender and sexuality issues in criminology and criminal justice, as well as violence against women in conflict and genocide. A member of the Michigan State University faculty since 1994, she has taught courses on research methods, statistical analysis, genocide, and women and criminal justice. She is also a co-author of the Cengage Learning/Wadsworth book, THE AMERICAN SYSTEM OF CRIMINAL JUSTICE, 15th Edition (with George Cole and Christopher E. Smith).

Listeners will quickly be drawn into Korman's tale as de Ocampo smoothly moves the action along, transitioning from voice to voice and chapter to chapter, without any awkward pauses or disruptions in flow.
