This is a really important and helpful book, definitely a specialized read, yet one which is thoroughly comprehensible and which easily connects with the wider picture of social and cultural transformation which summons us all. The apparent focus of this well-researched volume of alternative economics is on worker co-ops in the Connecticut River Valley: businesses which are owned by the workers, who jointly create their own management structures, business plans, work schedules, pay rates, and benefits policies. Based on methodical research, in-depth interviews of co-op participants, and analyses by the authors, the book provides an intimate, full-bodied view of the process of creating and working within this alternative model, level-headedly assessing both the advantages and challenges faced as co-op members seek to build and embody a more effective, fair, and satisfying form of economic life. The study comes off as simultaneously personal and theoretical, local and universal. We meet real people who we can identify with, listen in on nuts-and-bolts problems as though we were sitting down with coworkers in a small-shop meeting, but also encounter scholarly frameworks of social theory and history to help us make sense of it all and expand our vision of what is happening from the region where it is taking place to the world at large where it may yet take root. (We also learn of the many other places around the world where worker co-ops already have taken root!) By the end of the read, it is clear that this carefully calibrated study of worker co-ops and economic development in one well-defined location of the United States actually has the potential to point us in the direction of a major reassessment of our prevailing economic paradigm, and towards the possibility of a new era of proliferating worker co-ops (and other co-ops), which might combine the best of productive efficacy with humanity and social consciousness.

A good guide to understanding the co-operative alternative.

For one that feels no comfort and progress in capitalism--as practiced by too many, and socialism--as practiced by too many, this book nicely describes and helps us understand an alternative way that is practiced by not enough people yet, that feels just right. Thank you to the authors for showing me a way where entrepreneurs and workers can be both, do both, and reap the rewards together. May co-operative power grow and flower!
