Great introduction to a sure to be amazing series!!
By Tanisha R
I am a self-admitted book worm, and I have been the majority of my life. Here lately, I gravitate towards suspenseful books. Although not always my first choice (because of my age), I do also read YA novels. The majority of the YA novels that I read are very science fiction leaning. Because of this, I was very excited to get a chance to review this book. Here are my thoughts on the beginning of the “Perceivers” series.

Pros: I tend to be hesitant to read books from a new author, because it tends to take me a while to get used to the writing style. This was not the case with this book. Before I was 10% into the book, I was fully engrossed. The characters are very well developed, and there is so much action in the book that you will be on the edge of your seat. I don’t want to spill anything in regards to the content of this book, but there are so many twists and turns that you will be thoroughly shocked. The characters get their hooks into you, and so you truly CARE what happens to them. I also liked the parallels of the perceivers’ struggles to many of the issues minorities currently face. We all want to be accepted for who we are, and our differences embraced instead of scorned…perceivers are no different.

Cons: It caught me off guard that things like memories, or things seen on television will be in italics.

I can honestly say that I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Although this is a YA book, I am early 30s, and still enjoyed it. I definitely recommend this book. I'm excited to see what comes next. I received a pre-release copy of this book from the author at no charge to me in exchange for an honest review.

Looking forward to the sequel.
By Donte M McNeal
I received a free copy of this book for an honest review. The premise kind of reminded me of Sense8, the Netflix show about 8 mentally and emotionally linked people who are ultimately trying to stay away from those hunting them. I enjoyed the show and was really excited to read a book with a similar set-up. Also, stories where characters, main characters especially, have amnesia are interesting (if done right).

One thing I will say about this author is that she knows how to create an immersive atmosphere with her descriptiveness. Does a great job helping the reader "see" what's happening, and with perceivers, it's easy to feel what the characters are feeling.

One thing that always gets me when reading books with non-American characters is the lingo that it used. It can take you out of the book sometimes, unfortunate if the author does a great job pulling you in. That's not the case with this book; the UK slang is easy to understand.

I won't spoil anything, but roughly halfway through the book is when things gets much more interesting (not that the book isn't interesting before that, because it is). You get a more in-depth look at some of the characters, which can almost always be a boon for a story. The premise was delivered upon and executed well, the pacing was even, the characters were entertaining (though Michael did annoy me in the beginning...he grew on me though), and the story wrapped up nicely. I'm looking forward to the future installments, the ending set up what could be a great series.

Side note: Whenever I read a book, I rarely expect it to be five-star worthy (last time I gave 5 stars to a book was back in September) but I was pleasantly surprised by this book. Mind Secrets wasn't five stars in my mind, but it had most of what I was looking for: humor, action, suspense and character development. However, the side characters could have stood for a bit more development (I felt their relationships defined who they were as characters and I didn't like that).

A very interesting read
By Ms. Just One More Book
Michael awakens on the carpet of an unknown building with his hand wrapped around the plastic handle of a sharp kitchen knife. He has no memory of where, or even who he is, his mind is but a blank slate. Running from a man named Agent Cooper, Michael finds refuge with a group of teenagers who are also on the run. Born as 'perceivers', or empaths, the teens are fighting against the cure that will take away their sixth sense. As Michael fights alongside his new friends, he finds himself having to make deals with the devil to uncover who he really is.

Perusing through the science fiction dystopian section of the kindle unlimited, I came across this first book of the Perceivers series: Mind Secrets by Jane Killick. I downloaded a sample and never looked back. From the beginning scene of Michael waking up disoriented on the floor with a knife in his hand and absolutely no memory whatsoever, to the very end, I was hooked. The story is well paced with a lot of action intermixed with poignant moments. The characters are drawn realistically, and the author did a great job at capturing the views of both sides, whether it was the teens who wanted a choice in the cure, or the adult's fears of what an empath really was. All in all, a very interesting read that could easily be a stand alone novel. I look forward to seeing what this author has is store during book two.

The 46 Rules of Genius: An Innovator's Guide to Creativity (Voices That Matter), by Marty Neumeier

Not since Strunk and White’s ELEMENTS OF STYLE has a book compressed so many insights into so few pages. With his trademark simplicity and wit, Marty Neumeier has written and illustrated a concise guide that can be read quickly over a lunch break or savored slowly over a lifetime.

Part 1, “How can I innovate?” offers insightful guidance such as “Feel before you think,” “See what’s not there,” and “Ask a bigger question.” Rule #1 gives the paradoxical advice: “Break the rules.”

Part 2, “How should I work?” offers down-to-earth tips on craft: “Use a linear process for static elements,” and “Express related elements in a similar manner.” The reader is also reminded: “Don’t be boring!”

In Part 3, “How can I learn?” contains practical advice including “Do your own projects,” “Invest in your originality,” and “Develop an authentic style.”

Finally, Part 4, “How can I matter?” deals with the deeper questions of a career in creativity, such as “Overcommit to a mission,” “Build support methodically,” and “Become who you are.”

THE 46 RULES OF GENIUS is a reassuring lighthouse against the swirling tides of innovation. Geniuses from every discipline will want to keep it in sight.

(Educators: Those who recommend this book to students may also be interested its deeply researched precursor, METASKILLS, from which the rules were drawn.)

From the back cover:

There’s no such thing as an accidental genius. Anyone who’s reached that exalted state has arrived there by design. But simply wanting to get there is not enough. A would-be genius also needs a theoretical framework, a basic compass, a set of principles to guide the way forward.

Marty Neumeier, acclaimed author of The Brand Gap and Metaskills, has compressed the wisdom of the ages into the first “quick start guide” for genius—46 glittering gems that will light your path to creative brilliance. This is THE essential handbook for designers, entrepreneurs, marketers, educators, artists, scientists, innovators, and future leaders in every field.

How to become - if not a genius - at least someone who thinks more creatively and enjoys life more, indeed much more
By Robert Morris
I have read and reviewed all of Marty Neumeier's previously published books and consider his latest, The 46 Rules of Genius, the most important...thus far...because it will have wider and deeper impact. How so? Neumeier agrees with Tom and David Kelley (among others) that almost anyone can think more creatively if (HUGE "if") they are determined to think more creatively about how they think.

In his recent book, Metaskills, he identified and examined five talents that people need to develop in order to thrive "in an age of increasing man-machine collaboration." They are "feeling, or empathy, and intuition; seeing, or systems thinking; dreaming, or applied imagination; making, or design talent; and learning. None of these needs a high I.Q. What they need is a high regard for creativity." The 46 rules are creative rules. "They're general guidelines to help you envision, invent, contribute, and grow."

It is noteworthy that Rule 1 is "Break the Rules," hence a paradox: "Here's how to resolve the Genius Paradox:

1. React to the rules by embracing them or breaking them.
2. Observe the results.
3. Rewrite the rules from your own experience.

"You'll find there ARE rules for creativity -- YOUR rules. They may not be the ones that others follow but they'll be true and useful to you."

Neumeier carefully organizes and presents his information, insights, and counsel within four Parts, each of which poses a critically important question that many (if not most) of his readers have and to which he then responds:

1. How can I innovate?
2. How should I work?
3. How can I learn?
4. How can I matter?

He includes an observation by Arthur Schopenhauer with which I wholly agree: "Talent hits a target no one else can hit; genius hits a target no one else can see."

Here in Dallas near the downtown area, there is a Farmer's Market at which merchants offer fresh fruit as samples of their wares. In that spirit, I now offer additional excerpts that suggest the thrust and flavor of Neumeier's thinking:

o "Caution: The 46 Rules of Genius is not for everyone, for the simple reason that not everyone can be a genius. This is not usually a failing of native intelli9gence. It is more likely a lack of (a) will, or (b) skill." From the preface, "What Is a Genius?" (Page 21)

o "The framework [of a problem] is the boundary drawn around it. the 'rope of scope' that keeps it from sprawling to infinity. It narrows the focus, suggests a direction for the work, limits the investment, and determines how success is measured. If the framework is wrong, everything else will be wrong." (23)

o "Too much freedom can lead to mediocrity. Why? Because without boundaries there's no incentive to break through them. A real genius has no difficulty redefining a brief or defying convention. It's second nature. But give a creative person too much freedom, and you'll get a final product that's over-designed, over-worked, over-budget, and under-focused. The greatest gift you can give a genius is limitation, not license." (26)

o "The 'dragon pit' is the gap between WHAT IS and WHAT COULD BE. It's a space filled with discomfort, darkness, and doubt. Most people would rather grab the first rope thrown to them -- WHAT IS -- rather than stay and fight the dragon guarding WHAT COULD BE. But WHAT COULD BE is where the ideas are. A genius is someone who can tolerate the discomfort of uncertainty, while generating as many ideas as possible." (31)

o "Learning to learn is a metaskill -- a skill applied to itself. It multiplies your knowledge and accelerates your progress. When you learn to be your own teacher, you can acquire any skill you put your mind to. You can quickly build a new skill on the roof of the last one. You can move laterally from one skill to the next by bringing deeply understood principles to related disciplines. The ability to direct your learning is personal growth squared." (79)

o "Without the skills of your craft, you might be able to come up original ideas. But you'd have difficulty making your ideas stick -- demonstrating, developing, testing, and sharing them. Skills bridge the gap between thinking and making. There are no skills without practice -- practice is the exercise gym of genius." (110)

These are among the dozens of passages that caught my eye throughout Marty Neumeier's thoughtful and eloquent narrative and, obviously, no brief commentary such as mine can possibly do full justice to the scope and depth of his coverage. Mawson and the Ice Men of the Heroic Age: Scott, Shackleton and Amundsen, by Peter FitzSimons

Australia's best-selling nonfiction author of all time. Douglas Mawson, born in 1882 and knighted in 1914, was Australia's greatest Antarctic explorer. On 2 December 1911, he led an expedition from Hobart to explore the virgin frozen coastline below, 2000 miles of which had never felt the tread of a human foot. After setting up Main Base at Cape Denision and Western Base on Queen Mary Land, he headed east on an extraordinary sledging trek with his companions, Belgrave Ninnis and Dr Xavier Mertz. After five weeks, tragedy struck. Ninnis was swallowed whole by a snow-covered crevasse, and Mawson and Mertz realised it was too dangerous to go on. With the scant food and provisions they had left, turning back was almost equally perilous. Their dwindling supplies forced them to kill their dogs to feed the other dogs, at first, and then themselves. Hunger, sickness and despair eventually got the better of Mertz, and he succumbed to madness and then to death. Mawson found himself all alone, 160 miles from safety, with next to no food. Peter FitzSimons tells the staggering tale of Mawson's survival, despite all the odds, arriving back just in time to see his rescue ship disappearing over the horizon. He also masterfully interweaves the stories of the other giants from the Heroic Age of Polar Exploration - Scott of the Antarctic, Sir Ernest Shackleton and Roald Amundsen - to bring the jaw-dropping events of this bygone era dazzlingly back to life.

None is Too Many: Canada and the Jews of Europe, 1933-1948, by Irving Abella, Harold Troper

Winner of the National Jewish Book Award (Holocaust Category)

Winner of the Canadian Historical Association John A. Macdonald Prize

Featured in The Literary Review of Canada 100: Canada’s Most Important Books

[This] is a story best summed up in the words of an anonymous senior Canadian official who, in the midst of a rambling, off-the-record discussion with journalists in 1945, was asked how many Jews would be allowed into Canada after the war … ‘None,’ he said, ‘is too many.’

From the Preface

One of the most significant studies of Canadian history ever written, None Is Too Many conclusively lays to rest the comfortable notion that Canada has always been an accepting and welcoming society. Detailing the country’s refusal to offer aid, let alone sanctuary, to Jews fleeing Nazi persecution between 1933 and 1948, it is an immensely bleak and discomfiting story – and one that was largely unknown before the book’s publication.

Irving Abella and Harold Troper’s retelling of this episode is a harrowing read not easily forgotten: its power is such that, ‘a manuscript copy helped convince Ron Atkey, Minister of Employment and Immigration in Joe Clark’s government, to grant 50,000 “boat people” asylum in Canada in 1979, during the Southeast Asian refugee crisis’ (Robin Roger, The Literary Review of Canada). None Is Too Many will undoubtedly continue to serve as a potent reminder of the fragility of tolerance, even in a country where it is held as one of our highest values.

Review

‘If Canada and particularly its immigration policies now indeed live up to its positive image, this book was an important catalyst of the change. It remains as relevant as it was thirty years ago.’

(Walter D. Kamphoefner Society for German-American Studies vol 47:2013)

“A brilliant work of history.” (Leonard Dinnerstein American Jewish History)

“Irving Abella and Harold Troper have done a superb job of unearthing this sorry chapter in our hidden history. The general outlines were dimly known before, but by exhaustively pursuing primary sources they have documented the details with chilling precision.” (William French The Globe and Mail)

“[A] heart-rending book.” (Carol Goar The Toronto Star)

“An exceedingly powerful and detailed examination of the application of an illiberal immigration policy by an equally illiberal government so as to exclude from this country the oppressed, persecuted Jews...Abella and Troper have produced an enormously vigorous and diligently prepared description and analysis of what must be the most inhumane period in the history of Canadian immigration policy.” (Gerald E. Dirks Canadian Journal of Political Science)

“The definitive study of our pre-war treatment of Jews.” (Bob Harvey The Ottawa Citizen)

Book blew me away. Who knew that the Canadians were as disgusting and anti-Semitic as the Americans with NO regard for the lives of ANY of the adults and children that were begging to enter. There were the most ridiculous excuses as to why not to allow them to enter the empty country of Canada. Now I have an entirely different spin on Canada. Not a good one.

Cod: A Biography of the Fish that Changed the World, by Mark Kurlansky

From the Bestselling Author of Salt and The Basque History of the World

Cod, Mark Kurlansky’s third work of nonfiction and winner of the 1999 James Beard Award, is the biography of a single species of fish, but it may as well be a world history with this humble fish as its recurring main character. Cod, it turns out, is the reason Europeans set sail across the Atlantic, and it is the only reason they could. What did the Vikings eat in icy Greenland and on the five expeditions to America recorded in the Icelandic sagas? Cod, frozen and dried in the frosty air, then broken into pieces and eaten like hardtack. What was the staple of the medieval diet? Cod again, sold salted by the Basques, an enigmatic people with a mysterious, unlimited supply of cod. As we make our way through the centuries of cod history, we also find a delicious legacy of recipes, and the tragic story of environmental failure, of depleted fishing stocks where once their numbers were legendary. In this lovely, thoughtful history, Mark Kurlansky ponders the question: Is the fish that changed the world forever changed by the world's folly?

“A charming fish tale and a pretty gift for your favorite seafood cook or fishing monomaniac. But in the last analysis, it’s a bitter ecological fable for our time.” –Los Angeles Times

“Every once in a while a writer of particular skill takes a fresh, seemingly improbable idea and turns out a book of pure delight. Such is the case of Mark Kurlansky and the codfish.” –David McCullough

“One of the 25 Best Books of the Year.” –The New York Public Library

Mark Kurlansky is the author of many books including Salt, The Basque History of the World, 1968, and The Big Oyster. His newest book is Birdseye.

Amazon.com Review
You probably enjoy eating codfish, but reading about them? Mark Kurlansky has written a fabulous book--well worth your time--about a fish that probably has mattered more in human history than any other. The cod helped inspire the discovery and exploration of North America. It had a profound impact upon the economic development of New England and eastern Canada from the earliest times. Today, however, overfishing is a constant threat. Kurlansky sprinkles his well-written and occasionally humorous history with interesting asides on the possible origin of the word codpiece and dozens of fish recipes. Sometimes a book on an offbeat or neglected subject really makes the grade. This is one of them.

From Library Journal
In this New York Times best seller, Kurlansky gets us to look at the lowly cod in a whole new light. Search for the lucrative codfish played a key role in the development of the New World. Britain allowed the Colonies to trade with third parties-a milestone on the road to independence-due to a superabundance of cod. We also hear about the evolution of fishing technology that is so successful that cod have come close to extinction and the effect of the 200-mile limit. Moreover, the author relates marvelous Basque, French, British, and New England cod recipes from the last 500 years. Richard Davidson narrates this exceptionally informative and entertaining work.
James L. Dudley, Westhampton, NY

From Booklist
When something is said to have "changed the world," it is either a technological innovation or an article of trade. The North Atlantic cod is the latter, which may come as news nowadays, when it is best known as having virtually vanished from the Grand Banks, ruining the once robust fishing economies of maritime Canada and New England. Kurlansky introduces the delectable white-fleshed fish's long history by taking us out with some Newfoundland fishermen now employed in surveying the remaining cod population. But then he backtracks to tell an epic of transoceanic trade. Cod was for 1,000 years a commodity central to Europe's development and, through Europe, to development in North America, the West Indies, and Africa. Indeed, the Basques of northwestern Iberia and then the Norse discovered America well before Columbus when they probed westward, fishing for cod. Later, the fish became essential to slavery: the best dried cod was exchanged in Europe for goods to be traded for humans in Africa, while lower grades, still highly nutritious, were sold to feed West Indian plantation slaves. That is just some of the grand-scale history Kurlansky relays with maximum readability, plenty of handsome illustrations, and a 40-page appendix of superlatively annotated recipes. Ray Olson

In Cod We Trust!
By Steph
The marvel of Cod: A Biography of the Fish that Changed the World is that anyone could write a book this interesting about a subject so lackluster- a fish so boring that it does not even struggle when it is caught, instead allowing the fisherman to haul it up without a fight. Somehow Mark Kurlansky was able to make the codfish interesting enough that I continually drive my co-workers insane, insisting that they should read this book. Wars have been fought over it, revolutions have been spurred by it, national diets have been founded on it, economies and livelihoods have depended on it. The lowly cod really is the fish that changed the world. This book is a sober reminder of the impact of man on the environment, but it also a enjoyable and readable book filled with curious cod tidbits and a historical cross-section of odd cod recipes. In the same vein as The Perfect Storm or Longitude, this book is more entertaining than either of those maritime titles, although unlikely to be made into a movie starring George Clooney. If seeing the title Cod: A Biography of the Fish that Changed the World made you crack a smile, then you should read this book and tell your friends about it, so that they too can wonder if you're just making it up.

There's a reason it's widely recommended...
By Keith Smith
If you're one of the many people who's been caught up in the wave of highly focused historical books that have innundated our book stores, then this book is for you. Kurlansky presents the history of one of the most mundane items possible (excepting the humble potato and there's a book on that too) with an engaging and informative style. The book presents as a mix of history, current events, and recipes.
It misfired at times. There is not discussion (or recommendation) regarding management of resources or planning for the future of our fisheries. And some absolute statements (such as the superiour development of Basque cod cuisine) deserve to be challenged. And Kurlansky doesn't consider the fishing history of Native Americans; although, it may be for lack of documentation (I don't know; I'm not a historian; that's why I read these things).
In spite of this, it's an outstanding book. It meets the two key requirements for me in this regard; one, I recommend it to other people who report back on how much they liked it; and two, I'll read it again.
Buy it. Read it. You'll probably enjoy it.

Fishy Recipe for History and Evolution
By Amazon Customer
There's a cartoon in Matt Groening, the nine types of professors. One is the single-minded type, as in "The country that controls magnesium controls the world!" His main drawback is that he could be right. Cod sort of reminds me of that. You may not have known how important or popular this particular fish was to most of our ancestors in Western civilization, but, according Kurlansky, Cod was practically like bread. It was easy to fish, there was a ton of it, and once Europeans learned the various ways of drying it (with cold and/or salt) all people could think about was trading this staple. Yes, Kurlansky's book is single-minded, and at times you might forget this is a fish tale. When the Vikings found America, what where they looking for? And how did they manage to sustain themselves through the long ocean voyage? The answers are of course, cod. Kurlansky also has a few outlandish things to say about another favorite topic of his, the Basque, who it appears had been regularly fishing for Cod in Newfoundland long before Columbus found America. They were really good at keeping a secret, you see. Fortunately, there's a serious, or, at least more socially acceptable side, to Kurlansky's fish story. The fishing trade really is threatened. You can no longer practically walk on Atlantic cod. Even Icelanders who found their entire economy changing from one of sustenance to a first world service economy, during the two world wars, have a difficult time protecting their dwindling stock. If Aldous Huxley's grandfather, Thomas, asserted in the 19th century that cod would never become extinct, it was only because he could not imagine the rapid technological changes which would turn fishing into harvesting, and the classic practice of drying fish into freezing it, on board the fishing boats themselves. Good bye bacalao, hello fishsticks. It's a sad tale as ways of life dwindle and change, and even the very essentials of human existence that have lasted for thousands of years go unheard of by the post-industrial society. But are we really evolving into something better? Kurlansky peppers his narrative with quotes from notables throughout the ages and interesting, if often archaic, recipes.

Kids like the online sorting games and is easy to use
By Jeanette J. Nowak
I purchased this for a college course but now use it all the time as a new teacher to assess my students weekly. Kids like the online sorting games and is easy to use. I am a special education teacher and teach using alternate curriculum with CCEE standards. I have seen improvement with my students who are labeled as CD. Not just for regular education!

I wish I would have had this in September
By Life long learner
I brought this book as a requirement for class and the more I read it the more in love with it I am becoming. This book is not only useful for accessing the skills of students and grouping them, it also provides blanks of the assessments, games and an online feature. (I must admit that I have not used the online feature and probably won't do so as I am a bit old fashioned when it comes to keeping records). As a fairly new teacher I must say that this book is God sent. I'm considering buying the other books within the series as well. Ps, if you love in PA this book is also a good resource to use for studying the PRE-K/4 PECT exam :)

Essential part of K-12 grade teacher kit
By Darlene N. Bocek
One of the best programs out there to teach kids spelling through play. Even if just for the lists of word sorts, or for the placement test, make sure you have this book in your collection. There are words and games from prereader level to high school. Also, great help for SAT.
