About the Author
After reading Politics, Philosophy and Economics at Oxford University, Linda Davies worked for seven years as an investment banker, specializing in leveraged buyouts before moving onto the trading floor where she again focused on leveraged products. There she dreamed up the plot to her first globally successful financial thriller, Nest of Vipers. As a full time writer, Linda has written five more books for adults and four books for children. Her most recent thriller, ARk Storm, will be published by Tor Books in 2013. After leaving investment banking, she lived for three years in Peru, then a stint in London, before she moved with her husband and three children to the Middle East. In 2005 she and her husband were sailing in the Arabian Gulf when they were kidnapped by Iranian forces. They were held hostage on mainland Iran for two weeks before being released. After eight happy years living in Dubai, Linda returned to the UK in 2012 where she lives with her family deep in the English countryside.

This felt more like a romantic story than financial thriller

Something Wild (paperback)

Linda Davies writes with the two things in mind which really matter to me as a reader: a good story, and eloquent literary style. It is a treat to be able to take a holiday from crude reality in an exciting narrative, while still retaining the satisfaction of complex characters and good imagery.

The actors who play Charles and Anna also play Matilde's parents in a series of dream-like memories, as we learn the story about how they literally killed each other with laughter, giving new meaning to the phrase, "I almost died laughing". This theatrical and wildly funny play is a whimsical and poignant look at class, comedy and the true nature of love.

Ruhl's Quirky and Brilliant Voice At Its Best

Sarah Ruhl is emerging as an important voice in contemporary theater, and anyone who has read one of her scripts or seen a production of her work can understand why. Her voice is quirky and refreshing, and yet it doesn't become a gimmick or lose itself by being unrelatable. Cleanliness, the subject of this work, weaves its way through the lives of the characters as they struggle with family and relationships, grief, and the meaning of true love.

The two main characters, Lane and Virginia, are sisters with very different ideas about cleaning. The play opens with Lane talking about her Brazillian housekeeper, Matilde, who has given up trying to clean. Lane is infuriated; a successful doctor, she makes it clear that she did not go to medical school and work all of the hours that she has worked just to clean her own house. For her, cleaning is menial work, beneath her. Virginia on the other hand can't believe that anyone would give up cleaning their own house. How do you know progress, she asks the audience, if you don't know how quickly dust accumulates under your bed. For Virginia, cleaning is a refuge from the "dirtiness" of everyday living, of a world that isn't perfect and certainly isn't fair.

There are other characters and complex interactions, but the heart of this show is Lane's depressed housekeeper, Matilde. Determined to become a comedian and write the perfect joke, she is haunted by memories of her parents: her mother "died laughing" (because if you've heard the perfect joke, why would you continue to live?) and her father killed himself directly after. Her attempts to construct witty and ribald jokes, usually in her native tongue, are humarous; their juxtaposition with her memories of her parents and their magical love are heart-breaking. Matilde is one of the great tragic characters of contemporary theater.

Fans of magical realism will enjoy the playful use of space: actions on a balcony (imagined as another apratment) affect the characters below and disembodied words appear on the walls (translations of jokes, explanatory words, etc). Though not as spectacular as the staging of Ruhl's other great work EURYDICE (it's hard to compete with an elevator car filled with rain), the interplay between spaces helps reinforce the actions and consequences of characters and their decisions.

I would heartily recommend anything written by Ruhl, but this one is a special treat. Though not as emotionally-impactful as EURYDICE, it is a tender and often surprising meditation on love, and all of the clean and dirty emotions that it entails.

Ruhl Does Not Disappoint

I really enjoyed Clean House! Ruhl's writing is easy to follow, and I love the simplicity of her writing. Her stage directions are also great, something that Ruhl is famous for. I like the simplicity of the comedy and would definitely recommend reading this play!

I love this edition of the play, although I believe I did detect a few typos. The pages are easy to turn and the formatting makes it very easy to read. I had no idea Samuel French published plays in this style. And it's a great play! Very original and funny.

I scowled all the way through the book

Normally, I don't review books because I tend to agree to at least one review that's already been written. But, I HAD to review this time. I've just discovered Michelle Reid books and have enjoyed the handful I've read so far, but this one was a disappointment. The Hero was an ass and a bully and the heroine let her horniness overrule her brain EVERY TIME. Every time she got fed up and decided to leave him for good, I cheered her on because I knew it would make him really examine his behavior. And every time he would bully or sexually manipulate her into giving him to him and I would groan and roll my eyes. By the time the end rolled around and resolutions were happening, I was so over everything, I didn't care. I'll read more Michelle Reid books because I've seen how awesome they can be, but I'm glad this wasn't the first book of hers that I read.

Disappointing after promising start

This began with a great premise and with a thought-provoking set of problems to be overcome, in a man who can't say no to his ex and a demanding jealous daughter treating our heroine with disdain.
About a third of the way through, I disliked the male protagonist so much that I was waiting for the real hero to be introduced - Roberta (our heroine) deserved better. Sigh...There was no other hero, I had to stick with the disagreeable, smug, bullying, leading man and a heroine who, although perfectly justified in her demands, was *tasered* into submission by his kisses every time she was confrontational, so we never got a reasoned discussion from the hero about the problems, just his smug superior "I-know-how-this-novel-ends" attitude.
I was really disappointed in the outcome, and the grovelling should have been accompanied by some serious suffering by the hero for the novel to have truly been redeemed in my eyes.
However, that said, I DID finish the novel, it was very well written, and a very realistic dilemma, but oh, for me it missed by a smidgeon being a great read, just because that hero was such a furniture-throwing jerk, and the heroine such a pushover for love.

i loved this book , it is another great story by MR. the only thing i didn't like was when he grabbed her neck to hurt her because of his daughter's lies. the H knew his daughter had lied before . i highly recommend this book . i have read it many times .

I came across Julie Halpern's first novel while browsing the offerings over at Feiwel & Friends. I was so grateful they were publishing Long May She Reign that I grabbed Carpe Diem and GET WELL SOON as well because if they're publishing Ellen Emerson White books they not only have superb taste, they deserve my undying loyalty. Plus, both books just looked good. GET WELL SOON tells the story of Anna Bloom, a depressed teenager whose parents commit her to a mental institution when her panic attacks get in the way of her going to school. Alone, overweight, and braless, Anna starts writing a series of letters to her best friend Tracy as a way of staying sane despite being surrounded by drug dealers, Satanists, pregnant cheerleaders, oh my!

Anna's voice is at times bitter, amused, desperate, and uncertain. But it is always matter-of-fact. And it is this quality that is most appealing. I never got the feeling she was sugar-coating the way things were or trying to put something over on her reader. She writes all of these letters describing her experience in minute detail yet she doesn't send a single one. They stay in her room with her, her roommate Sandy, and Sandy's plastic baby Morgan. They seem to be a way of processing the unimaginable thing that has happened to her. By keeping them she can continue to review and add on to the narrative so that when it is time to go home there will be a record of how she survived. In an ironic twist of fate, life in the mental hospital turns out to be more interesting and "healthy" for Anna than it was outside. She makes friends who understand her and who do not send her "Get Well Soon" cards as though she had chicken pox or mono. Despite the absurd hospital workers and a few admittedly crazy fellow patients Anna is able to be herself. Paradoxically, the confining walls give her the space she needs to figure out not only what happened to her, but what she will do with this new-found self knowledge. I laughed repeatedly while reading about Anna and Sandy, Justin and Matt O. I felt about like Anna did when the time came to leave the hospital. I wasn't ready. A little more time in the loony bin, please. The real world can wait. But Anna had to go back home and the book had to end and I'm happy I got to spend this time with her.

A truly disgustingly unresearshed offensive work. Absolutey full of inaccuracies, harmful stereotypes, and idiotic plotlines. Wouldnt suggest to anymore who has actually spent time on a psych ward itll just make you angry.
