About the Author
Dr. Bernd Lauterbach has a PhD in electrical engineering. After spending several years doing Assembler, C/C++, and Occam programming for image processing, GIS, and auto routing systems, he joined SAP in 1995 at the SAP headquarters in Walldorf, Germany as part of the SAP ERP LE-TRA development team. From 2000 to 2007 he was the lead architect for SAP Event Management and SAP Auto ID Infrastructure, and subsequently led development of SAP Transportation Management as a program/development manager.

Dominik Metzger is a principal consultant in the SAP Supply Chain Execution space and the managing director of Westernacher Consulting Singapore. Dominik studied business management at the Cooperative State University in Mannheim, Germany. After joining SAP SE in 2007, he conducted a traineeship working in business development for supply chain management, strategy consulting, and solution marketing in New York. Dominik joined SAP Consulting in 2010, specializing in the transportation and logistics industry. In the following years, he delivered numerous implementation projects in the SAP Supply Chain Execution space across various industries: freight forwarding, ocean liner, trucking, retail, chemicals, and contract logistics.

Stefan Sauer has studied international business information technology at the Cooperative State University in Mannheim, Germany. After joining SAP in 2007, Stefan got experience in development and consulting teams in Germany as well as with SAP Research in Australia.

Jens Kappauf has been with SAP SE for more than 14 years. In his previous role as a senior business solution architect and industry solution manager, he was responsible for the strategic direction of SAP's solutions for third-party and contract logistics, while also focusing on technical integration, deployment, and implementation.

Dr. Jens Gottlieb has a PhD in computer science and has worked in software development at SAP SE in Walldorf, Germany since 2000. He has written three books and more than 25 scientific publications in the areas of transportation management and heuristic optimization algorithms, and has edited six books.

Dr. Christopher Sürie has worked for more than ten years as an expert consultant in supply chain optimization and transportation management at SAP Deutschland SE & Co KG in Walldorf, Germany. In this position, he has been involved in numerous international customer projects, implementing both SAP Advanced Planner and Optimizer and SAP Transportation Management and focusing on their planning capabilities and optimization engines in production and transportation. He worked as a solution architect in several SAP TM projects and taught numerous SAP TM customer trainings.

Great floor plans

Huge amount of information and visual detail. Great floor plans. Some unfortunate language about non-Western, non-modern cultures. And this is not a picture book--the text is very informative but also mandatory because the drawings are labeled in the original language for types of room and the terms are only defined in the text.

Fascinating!

This fascinating book presents the history of housing from huts to neo-traditional buildings of the 1990's. Though the architectural point of view dominates, there are ample references to anthropology, sociology and general history. The author's passion and intimate knowledge of the topic transpire throughout.

The work is generously illustrated, entirely with the author's own sketches. In particular, it is chock-full with floor plans of the buildings discussed, what makes it even more interesting.

Though often more descriptive than analytical, this book is highly recommended to anyone interested in the evolution of our built environment.

A passionate work

You don't need a lot of background in architecture to appreciate this wonderful book. Professor Schoenauer, who was emeritus professor of architecture at McGill University until his death in 2001, takes us on a guided tour of a huge number of different housing styles over a great expanse of time and in highly varied cultural contexts. He really makes you feel as if he has personally inspected all of the places he describes (though it hardly seems possible that anyone could have) and he does this without overburdening his reader with too many technical terms or requiring us to have a very profound understanding of why houses stand up. Perhaps what really makes the book alive is the author's own drawings--something like more than 500 line drawings of floor plans, cross-sections, elevation views, city plans, etc, etc, etc.

The book is divided into three major sections: The Pre-Urban House, the Oriental Urban House, and the Occidental Urban House. The first section divides housing into types by socio-economic/cultural organization which the author suggests is more or less evolutionary (though these types may be found simultaneously though distributed in space). The second section examines a very long span of time (but including in some cases the present) with detailed discussions of typical house designs in various periods in Egypt, Greece, Rome, India, China, and Islamic cultures. The final section is an historical treatment of developments in the West: the Dark Ages, the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, the 19th century, and the 20th century are all treated in turn.

Now something about the style of the book. At first, I was a bit distracted by Professor Shoenauer's digressions on culture, anthropology, historical sidelights, etc., but after a bit I started looking forward to these as much as learning about the buildings themselves. Admittedly, he doesn't always use the most recent or varied sources for his historical treatments (for instance, his sections on the dissolution of the Roman Empire could, in my opinion, be improved). And yet, by buying this book you are obviously reading someone's life work--and life passion--someone who is really overflowing with ideas, committment, scholarship, and who has an incredibly detailed and varied knowledge of his subject.

Excellent guide to this research method

Beach & Pedersen provide the clearest guide I've seen yet to process tracing. Their novel contribution is to break the method down into three types--theory testing, theory building, and explaining outcome. Then they provide clear guidance on each. They also provide much-needed clarity on causal mechanisms--what exactly they are and how to identify them through process tracing. All of this has been critical to me in my dissertation work.

A revised edition updated for digital photograph. That's what the blurbs say. The trouble is that there's perhaps three pages of new content, and the few new images are inferior to the original edition, which I have. The publisher may be in some dire straights to just repackage the first edition. Consider this: the 'original edition' costs about 2 1/2 times this one, and it's basically the same book. Maybe the publisher just wanted to turn a profit by reissuing an 'updated' version. Maybe they should have published more copies of the original. Unfortunately lots of photographers get fooled into thinking copyright date has something to do with quality.

In this case, it's the reverse. You'd think with all the photographers around that use care in lighting set ups, they could find a new bunch. I guess it's easier to just stick in a few pages of 'updated' material; problem is I can't find anything updated.

Another way the title of this book is a bit ludicrous; since the first edition revealed the 'secrets of top photographers', and given this books has the same 'secrets' as the first edition published at least five years ago, I can't see how these are secrets anymore. But if you're choosing between the two, you may as well buy this one since it's cheaper.
