The story of a human life—in any cultural context—is a rich and compelling drama. The systematic study of human development in context is a challenge for students and researchers alike. Human Development, Ninth Edition, draws from many fields (psychology, biology, sociology, anthropology, history, nursing, medicine, and public health, to name a few), to provide an up-to-date presentation of the key topics, issues, and controversies in the study of lifespan development.

In this edition of Human Development, I continue to be joined by Don Baucum, an experimental psychologist with clinical training, who draws on his own observations, his eclectic teaching experience, and an engaging writing style to help breathe life and voice into the narrative. We discovered in writing the previous edition that his expertise and mine as an applied developmental psychologist also with extensive teaching experience augment each other well, so Don is now my full co-author. Together, we attempt to provide a sound, often thought-provoking survey of contemporary developmental research and theory as well as applications to everyday life. Because this field is so broad, challenging, open-ended, and controversial, ample opportunities are included for students to consider a wide variety of perspectives and kinds of evidence. Students are encouraged to weigh the evidence against personal experience, and to develop an informed, critical perspective on how we come to be who and what we are as human beings and what each of us can expect in our years to come.

Student Diversity

Today's college students are more diverse than ever. A given classroom may have a cross-section of students who vary widely in age, ethnicity, personal experiences, and outlook. Today's students also vary in academic background, degree of exposure to the social sciences in particular, and career interests. Each of these factors, and more, create "filters" through which each individual perceives human development and life in general. Many students of human development will pursue a future in fields related to human service, including social work, education, nursing, counseling, various areas of psychology, and program administration. Some are already parents, many will become parents in the future; considerable practical advice about parenting is also included for this reason.

We believe that most students by far have a unique and potentially irresistible curiosity about how childhood, adolescence, and adulthood work. This text encourages that curiosity through its emphasis on diversity. Human Development presents people as they are in the context of culture and subculture, both within the United States and beyond. Rather than generalize from any one group of people, it makes a special effort to explain how developmental phenomena apply or relate to a wide range of peoples. The contemporary case studies and research efforts incorporated in the text reflect this variety. Hopefully, students will find themselves in the pages of this text, regardless of background, and yet at the same time escape the confines of ethnocentrism.

Chronological Organization

In the field of human development there is always the question of whether to organize developmental research and theory by topical chapters, such as bio-, logical, cognitive, language, social, and personality development, or to present child and adult development as it happens chronologically, emphasizing the holistic interrelationships. Human Development takes the latter approach and presents child and adult development primarily in chapters devoted to each of the traditional age divisions: the prenatal period, infancy, early childhood, middle childhood, adolescence, and young, middle, and older adulthood. The text opens with two chapters on perspectives on human development and its study, one on the interaction of heredity and environment, and one on prenatal development, and closes with one on death and dying. In between, each age range includes two chapters: one on physical and cognitive development, one on personality and sociocultural development. Given these necessary divisions, we remain alert throughout to the crucial importance of the complex interplay of the many different facets of development through which a whole person emerges.

Special Features and Study Aids

Throughout this text, we have woven cultural diversity and personal relevance into the ongoing narrative. Special boxed features extend this emphasis. A Matter for Debate explores controversies about human development and encourages thought and discussion. In Theory, In Fact focuses on popular concepts about development that are sometimes supported by research and sometimes not. Finally, A Closer Look examines important contemporary issues in development.

Within each chapter, the opener is a Chapter Preview that poses questions intended to stimulate interest in the main topics to be considered. Each major section of the chapter is followed by a brief Content Check, with True-False questions and a Thinking Critically question; answers and additional questions are provided on the Companion Website discussed below. Throughout, to enhance understanding, Tables present information such as brief summaries of contrasting views, additional terms, and current statistical data; Figures illustrate discussions of complex topics, research materials, and the like, and also present current statistical data in graphical form. The chapter then closes with a Chapter Revisited, which summarizes the main topics and issues while requiring that the reader return to the chapter for definitions and the like, followed by Key Terms listed in the order in which they appear in the chapter. Key terms are defined in the margins near where they appear; they are also collected in the comprehensive Glossary.

Human Development is an excellent textbook.

Human Development is an excellent textbook,
and one of the best textbooks I have ever used
in my studies in Psychology. The author has laid
out the chapters in chronological order from
infancy to old age. Theories of development are clearly explained and
charted. Many true-life examples of research and
studies are scattered throughout the text, making
theoretical material easy to comprehend.

I would highly recommend this textbook to any instructor
who is in search of high quality up-to-date material.

About the Author
Debra Stewart, MSc, OT Reg (Ont), is an Associate Professor in the Occupational Therapy program in the School of Rehabilitation Science at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. She is also a co-investigator at CanChild Centre for Childhood Disability Research, which is also at McMaster University. Her primary research interests include the transition to adulthood for youth with disabilities, and the use of the International Classification of Function Disability and Health from the World Health Organization. She has been the principal investigator for a number of research studies on the transition to adulthood including the development of best practice guidelines in Ontario; development and evaluation of a Youth KIT; and a Canadian study of the transitional tensions facing youth with disabilities.

Theoretically, the flow of explainations is Okay. The problem is that it contains too much material for one semester course(for an introductory couse), too much math and examples. It also lacks a CAD package such as matlab and simulink to support the book. The package becomes a must for a current textbook nowadays. More clear concepts rather than too much math examples and more practical application examples are hopeful.

It's got lots of maths...

But as an undergrad with GPA 5.8 (~distinction), this book really doesn't explain to ME the maths in an engineering context. For example, Chapter 3, with Orthonormal/Orthogonal signals, had me completely left in the dark as to why, as part of my job as a microelectronic engineer, I would want to orthonormalise a bunch of signals, even though the introductory paragraph goes:
"Orthogonal representations of signals are of general importance in solving many engineering problems. Two of the reasons this is so are that it is mathematically convenient to represent arbitrary signals as a weighted sum of orthogonal waveforms, since many of the calculations involving signals are simplified by using such a representation and that it is possible to visualize the signal as a vector in an orthogonal coordinate system..."
It then shows me some square waves that are apparently "orthonormal" and proceeds to dive straight in from there with the maths. In my subject we wrote a matlab program to show the orthonormalised version of a bunch of exponential signals (t^n where n=0..5); now /those/ final waveforms helped me understand better, but still..
Personally I find a lot of the maths quite ugly (orthonormalisation is just an example that could have been explained better), which I guess is the nature of the subject. But then maths isn't really my strength (I get Credits for my maths subjects) - and perhaps other readers find this book more inspiring. I have talked about this book with fellow students and I can only conclude (personally) that students with only an average ability/interest in maths will perhaps struggle with some of the proofs and find themselves "just remembering".
Perhaps this is simply a property of the subject in general, in which case I'm not as smart as I think I am, but I haven't read any other books to compare. The author clearly knows his stuff, but I don't - I study 5 other subjects full time and I do some contract work. It seems he has forgotten that things aren't necessarily as obvious to the reader as they are to him. Actually, it seems this is the case with my current lecturer also, so I'm really not liking "Signals and Systems" at the moment.. especially since my copy of this book I [bought] AUD for was stolen before I really had a chance to go through it.
Lots of detail, but probably too much. If this is you're only recommended text, go to your lectures. This book appears to be the "algebra of signals", and no more.

Overall this books is only okay. It emphasizes formulas and procedure way too much. Concepts are short, if concepts are explained at all. Basically, it lacks the necessary theory.

About the Author
Ray V. Herren has been actively involved in agriculture for most of his life. He grew up on a diversified farm, where he played a major role in the production of livestock. He obtained a bachelor of science degree in agricultural education from Auburn University, a master's degree in agribusiness education from Alabama A & M, and a doctorate in vocational education (with an emphasis in agricultural education) from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. Dr. Herren has taught at Virginia Tech, Oregon State University, and the University of Georgia in Athens, where he recently retired as head of the Department of Agriculture Leadership, Education, and Communication. In addition to being a national leader in the Future Farmers of America (FFA) Alumni organization, he has served on numerous committees from the local to international level, including a national task force to develop FFA programs for middle school and the National Committee for Career Development Events. His prolific scholarly activity includes 26 journal articles, 51 invited or refereed presentations, and 12 books and manuals. He has also earned several awards for his commitment to service, as well as UGA's prestigious College of Education Outstanding Teaching Award.

Really crummy book. The text takes up only about half of each page when there aren't pictures. When there are pictures, they are almost always stock images of scientists swirling test tubes or looking at rows of crops. The paper quality is terrible- like magazine paper but much thinner. There is some good information peppered throughout the book, but overall it's just another low quality, high cost book.

The Starting Gate for Eclipse

Amazon's nice selection of Eclipse books, even by this author, can be daunting. You see volumes 1, 2...n..; versions 4, 4.x... 4.n; vogella; java... and !!!!

Cutting through all the fog, THIS BOOK IS BY FAR the best starting point for general and beginning Eclipse use, as well as a great reference for all levels. IOW, even though this is "volume two" you DO NOT need "volume one" to begin learning the Eclipse IDE, this IS it! Confusing? I know. Since I'm targeting this review at beginners to Eclipse development (which is where this book shines), let me detail the frame. First, Eclipse is an open source (freely available free) SDK or IDE. Those initials mean software development kit or integrated development environment-- specifically targeted to Java coding.

When I say Java, I mean Java application development-- meaning writing software programs / apps in Java. An IDE is a kind of "editor" or gui that allows you to write, debug and test drive your programs and apps, or even pieces/ units within them. IDEs themselves have plug-ins, design pattern templates, their own api's, and much more. Before you (as an ADVANCED developer) use those tools, you've got to first learn to use an IDE itself (like Eclipse, DrJava, EasyEclipse, J, Netbeans, Cube-J, BlueJ, tIDE, etc.). Other books, volumes and editions in this series show you advanced techniques for those plug ins and app development; THIS book is a great intro to how they all integrate from square one.

Even though this starts at the beginning, you have to understand at least the basics of OOP, Java, libraries, runtimes, compilers and other aspects of development, or you'll get lost quickly, even at this gentle level. Unlike C#, Java uses bytecode and distributed compilation/ interpreting, so developing in Java has its plusses and minuses, but Eclipse is one of the top open source IDEs for many Java jocks. I predict that in the future, compilers will all be distributed and only "thought of" as a unit (your smartphone doesn't recognize your voice, Google's servers do).

Commercial IDEs can be as cheap as an old $50 C++ IDE from Borland on ebay that includes a compiler, to $1,000 plus for VBA ides that include server licenses (and not all that well supported, being part of .net!). Visual Studio and other cheap/free IDEs also are available for C# if you just want to get your feet wet in practicing the interfaces. IDE career tip: for very specialized (and high paying) projects and careers, consider learning a rarer IDE like object/pascal for the newer delphi compilers-- you'll have a rare skill (like Erlang) that's growing like crazy right now! I love Java, but just trying to help you be rare and specialized.

If you're really serious about getting into or advancing in Java development, you also need to search Amazon for the keywords: Maven, Ant and Git. These topics will help you organize and plan at the project level once you're deeply into versions, and will help you jump out of the trees to see the forest once in a while (figuratively, not the red/green trees and hash tables!!!!--- well, maybe.). These tools help with version control, difference tracking (Delta compression, etc.), project, and other management needs. Why get a separate book on Git or Maven when books like this on Eclipse cover them? Because, in Eclipse, many of the controllable Git features are hidden and automated, and at some point you might want to control them directly. That said, this author does a great job of parsing Git features both automatically and directly for version control.

This book is highly recommended for the nuts and bolts of Eclipse navigation, features and operations, and a great intro to IDEs in general, given that you can download it free for numerous OS's (The Eclipse IDE, not the book! Go to eclipse dot org forward slash downloads); and I probably don't need to tell you the vast number of Java libraries out there to get you flying very quickly on your first million dollar, copyrighted program / Android or IOS app. You really need to read THIS BOOK first before trying to tackle plug ins and advanced API's, unless you're already very familiar with ides in general-- still, this book is about best practices and state of the art features in Eclipse if Java is your juice. I DO NOT recommend this (or any other math or software text) in ebook form, even though I love my fire. When it comes to UML, formulas, diagrams, etc. the ereaders are a true pain to integrate and study, and it is hard enough to learn a new interface as it is. Get the paperback!

EMAILERS' ANSWER: Several folks have emailed saying that if you're really good in Java you don't "really need" an IDE. Well, ok. My humble opinion is that with the many new codecs and distribution profiles (from mobile to distributed, concurrent, web, embedded, parallel, combined paradigm, partially client compiled, etc.) IDEs are "necessary" if you think of them as time and work savers, and like Design patterns, to keep you from reinventing the wheel. Plus, if you're seriously developing multi thousand line code with plug ins, templates, libraries, etc. the version control features alone are a must (eg. compression routines to recognize and save differences only).

Just one opinion, but I value yours also if you're that good, and will stay open minded, thanks for emailing! (Update: re-reading your email, you seem to be talking about bypassing the compiler, not the IDE! This book doesn't cover it, but yes, you can install a syntax sensitive editor in your code that saves code in pcode so you don't have to write (or use) a separate scanner - parser. The user code never gets saved as text scripts, so there is no need to compile if you choose that technique. Folks who do a lot of XML scripting have learned that you can "sim" a virtual compiler with lex/parse tools like antlr.

TWO: "General question, does book cover Groovy, or for that matter, DSLs?" A: I think you're asking whether Eclipse itself covers Groovy, for use in creating your own domain specific languages. YES. You need the GroovyEclipse plug in, and after loading it, you can do everything this text talks about in Groovy, just like Java, including source level edits, highlighting, etc. NetBeans has Groovy support (post 6.5) as native, but both work just fine, and you can access all the cool dynamic features of Groovy (operator overloading, closures, script builders, lists/maps, etc.) that you wish Java had. The JVM runs it just like Java, fully transparent. No, this text doesn't specifically cover Groovy details, but ALL the IDE features are identical for Groovy and Java.

Succinct introduction to Eclipse

If you come from Microsoft Visual Studio and arrive to Eclipse to do Android development, you need a good introduction to the most important tips and tricks in the new environment. This is the book to get that.

From what I gather, it is an e-book made from blog posts and I really enjoyed the directness of it. It is a real time waster when books start with long and boring introductions. I want the heart of the matter immediately and this book delivers on that.

However, at the same time, and somewhat contradictory, I found it to be a bit short on subjects. I would have enjoyed reading in this succinct format about a few more things in Eclipse, like preferences and plugins.

I do wish this model of monetizing good blog posts and tutorials by releasing e-books is the way of the future. And you should look at buying this book in that light, which is the reason it deserves the highest rating. Lars Vogel's web site and tutorials are always an enjoyment to read.

Great tutorial to getting started!

Great introduction into programming with Eclipse. I really liked the summary of shortscuts in the appendix and the preference settings, e.g. Save Actions, which simplify the life of the developer. The automatic positioning of the semicolon is invaluable.

I also liked the explanation of the creation of my own templates. The advanced debugging tips were also useful for me, e.g. I learned that I can set Breakpoints on classes.
