About the Author
Gene Stratton-Porter (1863--1924) was born on a farm in Indiana. She later lived in a cabin adjoining the Limberlost Swamp, immortalized in her best-selling A Girl of the Limberlost. In 1923 she moved to California for her health, but was killed in an automobile accident in 1924. Other Stratton-Porter novels reissued by Indiana University Press include Freckles, Laddie, The Harvester, and The Keeper of the Bees.

A charming fable of American life in the 'teens

Because of my name, many have asked me over the years if I was familiar with Gene Stratton-Porter's book, "Michael O'Halloran". As a boy, I was given a copy containing the pen and ink drawings and stills from the "photoplay" and have treasured it since (I do not know if modern editions contain either set of illustrations). Re-reading it as an adult, I am still charmed by this tale of an orphaned newspaper seller who asks nothing of the world except to "be square". It is easy to overlook major holes in the plot (for example, we never do know what is wrong with Peaches other than she is sick and can't walk), when we are presented with such a vivid description of American life in 1914 - even if some of the city scenes don't quite ring true. Though the characters suffer many hardships, the overall tone is so upbeat that it's easy to see why this book outsold "Pollyanna" in 1916. Stratton-Porter's skill as a naturalist make the country scenes especially vibrant. Her ear for dialog is unsurpassed showing the reader that, if life in America wasn't like this, it should have been. Having read this book, I am ready to believe that children and adults did speak this nicely to each other once upon a time. You, too, will wonder if the world wouldn't be a lot better off if everyone could just "be square".

One of Gene's best stories!

I've read most of Ms.Stratton-Porter's books and this is one I've been wanting to read for months but wasn't available on Kindle until recently. She also wrote "Girl of the Limberlost". Most of her stories center on a nature setting as she was known as a botanist of sorts in her day and used her knowledge of that to write stories. This book is about a 10 yr. old boy making it on his own by following closely by his mother's instructions : stay away from booze, no stealing, giving an honest day's work for pay, keeping clean and saying his prayers. He does well for himself managing to steer clear of the dreaded orphanage home and being an industrious news boy. His good nature draws people to want to help him and he in turn has a courageous heart and rescues a small girl left to herself after her grandmother dies. All's well that ends well. This book doesn't have a hint of racial bias in it as other GSP books have. It's a wonderful book for children to read.

Some solved problems, little background

My first exposure to Bessel functions was while I was doing an internship and I was attempting to simulate radar imaging on a spherical target. The gentleman that I was studying under had previously written this code in Matlab, and I was attempting to translate it to C++. I purchased this book with the hope that it would help me obtain a better knowledge base to tackle this problem. It didn't.
Later, I took a graduate math course in special functions (Green's Functions, Fourier Transforms, Legendre Polynomials, and Bessel Functions). Although this course was extremely challenging, I found that the examples given in Bowman's text were perfect for the segment of the course that was devoted to Bessel Functions, and it helped me raise my grade on homeworks.
In the end, the book is strictly about Bessel Functions. There is hardly any background (page 1 begins right away with Bessel Functions of zero order). The book progresses linearly with the most basic Bessel Functions, a few examples, and eventually ends with Bessel Functions of any real order and a few applications.

A true introduction to Bessel's fuctions.

I think this book acutally fulfil the the titles it named. An "introduction ot the bessel functions, ." I have read other books on so called introduction ot certain subjects , say Riemann's Zeta Function, but actually the book is as difficult as a treatise book on that subject. In this book, the author acutually doing the good work. From the beginning, he defined
the bessel function of order zero as a power series, Don't ask why, just accept the facts. Then he gradually presents more facts about Bessel functions without rigorous proof. That is good!! Before mastering the subject, just accept the facts and in the future, if you want to know more about Bessel functions, you have already have a certain background knowledge about that.
If you read Watson's timeless classic " teatise on "bessel function", not only you will get stucked and you may lose interest to that as well. So I think this is the best book for those mathematicians or engineers who would encounter bessel function. I really have a lot of fun in reading this book !

Tough but good book.

As did someone in a previous review, I bought this book for a bit of help in an advanced graduate-level math class. This book provides a lot of Bessel function examples. It really is a problem-based text with tons of pertinent examples. Most of my learning was done by reading/trying the examples and then relating them to homework problems.

What is little noted in the history books, however, is that the Bagration offensive was not the Soviets’ first attempt. Battle for Belorussia tells the story of how, eight months earlier, and acting under the direction of Stalin and his Stavka, three Red Army fronts conducted multiple simultaneous and successive operations along a nearly 400-mile front in an effort to liberate Belorussia and capture Minsk, its capital city. The campaign, with over 700,000 casualties, was a Red Army failure.

Glantz describes in detail the series of offensives, with their markedly different and ultimately disappointing results, that, contrary to later accounts, effectively shifted Stalin’s focus to the Ukraine as a more manageable theater of military operations. Restoring the first Belorussian offensive to its place in history, this work also reveals for the first time what the later, successful Bagration operation owed to its forgotten precursor.

David M. Glantz, an officer in the US Army from 1963 to 1993, is editor in chief of The Journal of Slavic Military Studies. He is the author of numerous books, many from Kansas, including his celebrated Stalingrad Trilogy. Mary Elizabeth Glantz obtained a PhD in history from Temple University and is the author of the book FDR and the Soviet Union: The President’s Battle over Foreign Policy (Kansas).

Must have for Derms

Litt is a great reference book. It is very complete and I use it at least once a week and often more often. It is pricy, but I just replaced my 13th ed. which served me well. It is well organized and includes things you will just not find in a drug insert or the PDR. It not only lists derm reactions but pretty much any other side effects of the medications and the frequency based on drug data and reports in the literature. I have used this book ever since residency and don't think any self-respecting dermatologist should be without a copy.

There is an on-line version of this product that is updated in real time, but it is insanely expensive and, unless you buy it right at the beginning of the year, you only get to use if for whatever time is left in the calendar year (this makes no sense to me...???).

Not for me

While I'm not what you'd call a crafty person, I do have aspirations of craftiness. Unfortunately, they don't really extend beyond pinning projects on Pinterest.

After reading the synopsis of this book, I had high hopes that I could finally unleash my inner Craft Goddess! Sadly, she remains leashed for the moment as none of Mr. Kate's projects really appealed to me. I do want to try her nail polish suggestions, but that's about it. At least I have a fun new blog to follow!

Most of the projects in this book are a little too quirky or young for my taste (a doily skirt? metal studs on your boot heels?), but I did love Kate's stories. Part memoir and part DIY, the stories were my favorite part of this book!

Growing up in LA with a hippie-inspired mother and a father show business big wig, Kate's childhood sounds much more exciting then mine! I know that I never got to have dinner with Tom Hanks or meet Michael J Fox on a movie set. Then she grows up to marry a real-life rock star? Granted, he's a member of a boy band I've never heard of, but still!

Kate seems like a fun, charismatic person and I loved reading her stories! While the crafts she choose to highlight in this book weren't for me, I'm sure that they'll appeal to her target audience and that they'll love the book!

That said I did not enjoy the stories included

So I actually pre-ordered this book and never finished reading it. Visually, the book is stunning. The photos and layout are gorgeous. And while not all the DIYs are inventive or something I'd be interested in doing that's to be expected.That said I did not enjoy the stories included. It honestly could be just that Kate can't write (sorry) and ends up telling her stories rather than sharing them and engaging the reader. But instead of being funny I found the book to be....her showing off? Most of the stories are just name-dropping with some filler. I guess I never realized how privileged she was from watching her YouTube videos, and that's my fault, but the book was just not entertaining and ended up rubbing me the wrong way. If you are anything like me, I search the shelves at my local book store and find myself empty handed because of the lack of creativity that comes within the newest reading releases. Each DIY book contains the same projects, follows the same format, and at times feels like I'm reading the same text in each book. When branching out to autobiographies, the same exact story of loss and triumph are usually given with the exception of a new face plastered on the cover. Sometimes I feel as though with these categories, content has become unoriginal and the "true self" of people are lost between the lines of text they try to provide their audience for a positive and inspiring reaction. If you've found yourself in this same "reading rut" as I have, then I definitely recommend reading Mr. Kate's newest book release, "A Hot Glue Gun Mess".

Kate takes you on a journey through short stories of her life in real events that helped defining who she is in her life today. This amazing, uncensored book gives a sign of relief that unoriginal content has not been lost and you truly feel as though you are talking to your closest, best friend with the stories Kate selflessly tells providing laughter, embarrassment, love, separation, and even those that make you want to blush yourself just hearing about! This new take on an autobiography is very refreshing and unlike any other autobiography I've read in the past.

What also separates this release from others is that Kate puts her fashion, interior decorating, and DIY professionalism spin on each short story provided for a fun new project you can try at home yourself. Each story helped in giving Kate the inspiration for creating these new pieces and she helps in telling the reader each step of the way on how to create their very own work of art just like hers. You'll see fun pieces such as unique furniture pieces, beautiful home decor items, fashionable clothing & accessories, and even some makeup & hairstyles within this DIY and autobiography mix! Not only are these DIY projects fun to re-create they are also original pieces that are not found within the same DIY novels that keep being mass produced each year.

In all honesty, there is something about Mr. Kate that you feel a connection with that inspires you to be yourself and live life to the fullest. I applaud Kate for being able to accomplish this with the sharing of each story & DIY project. As a long time fan of hers through her website blog & YouTube channel, I would expect nothing less from the queen of the bedazzled jeweled glue gun.
