Scholar hits the mark on higher ed outreach

David Maurrasse has produced a thoughtful study in his book which examines four rather different and distinct IHES (Institutions of Higher Education). By studying how each IHE serves its community, readers can get a good picture of the different approaches in use today. The IHEs--which include a state, an Ivy League, a private, and even a community college campus--serve as a fine set of baseline campuses for study.
Hostos is my particular concern, since I am a Dean at Hostos, and I am well versed in the challenges we face each day in serving our South Bronx community. I believe that Dr. Maurrasse has indeed hit the mark and hit it well in this study. I can, at least, verify his contextualizing of the Hostos mission and its community's needs. His method of becoming thoroughly familiar with the physical aspects of each campus and its history by closely interviewing members of the community as well as faculty, staff, administrators, and students is laudable. At Hostos I know he spoke to long-time stakeholders from the college community and the community at large.
The book should be challenging higher education policy makers to focus on improving community outreach strategic plans for years to come. IHEs can not afford to be percieved as "ivory towers."

As a student of a university that is struggling with just how to reach out to our community, I would highly suggest it to anyone who wants to spend some time and reevaluate the relationship between institutions and communities.

Through the work of five authors--Jose de Oviedo y Banos, Juan Ignacio Molina, Felix de Azara, Catalina de Jesus Herrera, and Jose Martin Felix de Arrate--Domesticating Empire explores the Ibero-American Enlightenment as a project that reflects both key Enlightenment concerns and the particular preoccupations of Bourbon Spain and its territories in the Americas. At a crucial moment in Spain's imperial trajectory, these authors domesticate topics central to empire--conquest, Indians, nature, God, and gold--by making them familiar and utilitarian. As a result, their works later proved resistant to overarching schemes of Latin American literary history and have been largely forgotten. Nevertheless, eighteenth-century Ibero-American writing complicates narratives about both the Enlightenment and Latin American cultural identity.

Excellent emotional Realism that visually integrates the texture of living in the context of Being to reveal a strong sense of loving kindness. Not sure if this is the intended Realism of The Realist, but that's ok.

I found The Realist book at the Denver Comicon in Colorado. The drawings are lovely even when the life content pictured is sometimes very painful. The exadurations necessary to portray poiniency leave a person stretching to imagine good things. The over all effect of reading and seeing images is a heart felt experience of good living even when embedded in circumstances.

I really liked this book. Thanks for making it.

Those who follow The Realist on social media will know, these are deeply witty/tender/ironic/true/sad/ecstatic postcards from the daily life of the author and his family. The French title of this series of comics is "K.O. a Tel Aviv" which means "Knock-Out in Tel Aviv" as well as phonetically " Chaos in Tel Aviv". Expect double (sometimes triple) entendres at least once on every page. It's a great book, highly recommended.

Honestly my favorite book that I have ever read! I have read this book cover to cover dozens of time and could never get tired of it! Emotional, real, connectable, beautiful, incredible illustrations. Asaf is an incredible writer depicting everyday struggles and emotions with little words and sometimes without any and yet you can read into each frame as if it tells an entire story. This touching book has made me cry and laugh all within the same page. Well written and incredibly beautiful.
