In 2016, The SAT's go through the biggest change in their history, making a study guide an important tool. Kaplan has been one of the leaders in this space and their top offering is this "SAT Premier" edition. This edition includes a massive study guide, a DVD and the online edition. Kaplan has taken the occasion of the new SAT test to revamp their study guide. This edition weighs in at nearly 1337 pages vs 819 pages for last year's edition.

In addition to more stuff, the new SAT Premier 2016 has a much better organization of information. It's much easier to get through this book to find what you are looking for and get the info you need. As with year's past, the real jewel of this book is the online edition which has detailed video tutorials in each section, which are much more helpful in context. There's also a DVD which is a good entry point and works well to help reduce the stress and anxiety of the test.

Interestingly, Kaplan trimmed down the number of practice tests. The previous edition had 8 total, while this one has 2 in the book and 3 online. The reduction makes sense as doing 8 practice tests is a little excessive. A HUGE book. Over 1300 pages. It's full of valuable information, however it was overwhelming for my daughter. I'm not sure it I would purchase this again or recommend it mainly because of how overwhelming of a book it is. My daughter said it as a little frustrating because of the size and so much information.

While I wouldn't read Harry Potter in English I was delighted to get it in Latin. After reading the first book I was really hoping that more would be translated though I didn't really expect this to happen. After all Latin isn't supposed to be very popular! But the success of the first book proved me wrong. I was happy to get this book and it lived up to my expectations. It's an entertaining story written in highly readable Latin. If you liked the first book you'll love this one too.

It was lots of fun reading this book and having it in Latin was a special treat indeed. The translation is great and reading it I felt that the book was written in Latin. The translator, Peter Needham, has done a pukka job at rendering modern language into an ancient tongue, and words such as car (autocinetum) or elevator (anabathrum) seem to come natural. This just goes to show that far from being a dead language Latin has been in use continuously from Roman times right up to the present. New words have been added to Latin just like English gets new words for new things and even though the number of Latin speakers today is much lower than in the past it is still a living language that continues to be used. I wish the rest of the Harry Potter series could be translated as well. It's so much more fun than reading De Bello Gallico, for example, and would a lot more encouraging for students to learn Latin and indeed make learning Latin more fun.

If you love reading Harry Potter and love reading Latin, then get both the first and second HP books translated by Peter Needham. I recommend completing at least first-year Latin before attempting to read these books.

A fan of Peter Needham's brilliant translations of Harry Potter, I've posted a lengthy review of this latest installment, a review unfortunately too long to appear here, on my own web site: edwinfirmage.com/Supporting_Documents/Creative_&_Scholarly_Works_files/Review%20of%20Harry%20Potter.pdf. The review includes numerous examples of Needham's deftness in turning idiomatic English into equally idiomatic Latin. Suffice it to say, this new translation is as good as the first. I can't imagine a better way to introduce kids to the fun of Harry Potter and Latin. And for anyone interested in learning conversational Latin (no, that's not a contradiction in terms), this book is a superb teacher.

Good general travel guide but health and safety tips mmmmm

What you would expect from Lonely Planet a good basic guide to all the well known places in the D R.

This is the latest version and updated in October 2014 and the only disappointment for me with the book, which is why I lack a bit of confidence in it, was that the Chikungunya virus didn't get a single mention in the health and safety part of the guide. This is THE biggest health and safety story in the country over the last year or so. The virus arrived in the DR in December 2013. So either the authors haven't been here as recently as they claim or they didn't talk to any Dominicans when they were here.

The Rough Guide is more comprehensive

This guide was okay but after a couple of days with it, I decided to purchase the Rough Guide instead and found that it included much more detail for the budget traveler and those heading off to see some of the less obvious sights. In comparison, the Lonely Planet didn't include whole towns that were included in the Rough Guide and the information seemed to be a lot more out of date. When clicking through to some of the tour guides or hotels, even tough this book was published just a month before I bought it, they were already out of date!

If you are heading to the DR for one or two weeks or staying in an all-inclusive, this book will be just fine but if you're going to be there any longer then I would suggest getting the Rough Guide.

Easy to read and small enough to take on vacation ...

Easy to read and small enough to take on vacation with me when I went to the DR. Gives a great overview of all the hot spots throughout the DR. I went to the local book store and found that this book has the BEST overall description of the country!
