City of gods - Hellenica, by Jonathan Maas

The gods are back, and they are tearing this world apart

Zeus, Dagon, Loki, Lugh and countless other deities have come back to this earth and rule over their individual districts with no goal other than satiating their own petty desires.

The sole remaining functional province, Hellenica, decides to act. They build the Academy and are about to recruit 16 young gods with the hopes of training them to police this world.

The Horsemen

Of these 16 young gods, four have strange powers that the Academy might not be able to control. Kayana Marx, Gunnar Redstone, Tommy Alderon and Saoirse Frost aren’t like normal gods, and their abilities stem from the Monotheistic times.

But if Hellenica has any hope of holding this world together, they will have to teach these four to exercise their powers to their fullest extent, even if it might bring everything to an apocalyptic end.

Wow. Myth and Legend Retold.
By HeroFan
Mr. Maas has done an excellent job of retelling the classic myths of our world. From the green island of Ireland to the rising sun of Japan. He brought back a very good chunk of my start into reading mythology.

When I read his sample start, I was immediately hooked. I stayed up long past my normal sleep time to just get a few more minutes in. Sadly, that turned into hours. I was one very tired worker the next day, but his book was well worth the read.

I have to say that this book reminded me very much in some ways the old Incarnation series by Piers Anthony. A world of gods, magic and science blended together from the mundane to the fantastic. And just like Piers Anthony, he makes a world so much like our own, yet twists it with enough magic and fantastic to make you go: Wow, I'd love to visit that place. Maybe not live there, but definitely visit for a very long time.

Maas doesn't delve into WHY the world is the way it is, I suspect that's another story in itself(wink), but makes it blend seamlessly enough that we accept it as the way it has always been. Though there are hints throughout the book and from characters that it wasn't always like that....

Maas hasn't paid me one dime. Look at my review history and you'll see I'm been reading a lot of these new writers, why? Because, sometimes it's good to embrace a new writer on the chance they can bring a bit of magic back into my world. Thank you Maas. You were very entertaining and I will definitely add your names to a short list of writers I'll check on.

Like I've told the other writers: You write. I will buy.

and P.s. You should definitely pay your editor and proofreader a better rate. They did an excellent job. I didn't even notice any grammatical issues. It was smooth....

Excelsior!!

2D characters bland plot
By joe808
I read the first chapter and it was so-so. That is the problem, there is no growth to any of the characters. What powers and abilities they have at the beginning stay the same. The characters do not progress in solving their personal issues. There is nothing in the first two parts of this book which endeared me to any character.

The plot is so bland. A follows B follows C it is so linear. There are no surprises. There is no deep meaning. No truths except maybe everyone has flaws even gods. I felt also that absolutes like Death and War were trivialized. The main characters are supposed to be incarnations, supreme in their sphere of influence. They are not. Does the author mean to portray Death as just death, just a pale shadow and one of many? If so it turns what should be a main character into just another minor character.

The writing is unimaginative and dull. Explosive scenes of violence? Nope, action scene are explained to the reader like reading a text book or commenting on chess moves. Pawn to C4. Powers and abilities are left unexplained or they are not unique. The snake bites him. He survives the poison because he is pestilence. That makes sense but its hardly good reading.

Wants exciting stories of gods come again? I'd check out Kevin Hearne's Iron Druid chronicles.

Want a YA series instead? Try Rick Riordan. The books are 100 times better than the movies.

In my opinion any book by the following authors are worth paying for Brandon Sanderson, Ilona Andrews, Jim Butcher, Steven Gould, Lois McMaster Bujold and Micheal J. Sullivan.

Up and coming authors I like Marko Kloos, Will Wight, Anthony Ryan and Patrick Rothfuss.

City of Gods Helenica
By Skip Usen
Keep your eye on this author, John Maas.

He is a marvelously inventive writer whose characters are as unique and tightly drawn as are his descriptive passages of a world far, far away. Fortunately, Maas' storytelling is first-rate as well, so once you pick up this book you're in for a treat.

Perhaps the best recommendation I can give is the moment I finished City of Gods Helenica, I passed it on to my thirty-one year old daughter who, frankly surprised me, loved it as well. I can't recall the last time we both agreed on a book or movie.
