Islamic State stunned the world when it overran an area the size of Britain on both sides of the Iraq-Syria border in a matter of weeks and proclaimed the birth of a new Caliphate. In this timely and important book, Abdel Bari Atwan draws on his unrivalled knowledge of the global jihadi movement and Middle Eastern geopolitics to reveal the origins and modus operandi of Islamic State. Based on extensive field research and exclusive interviews with IS insiders, Atwan outlines the group's leadership structure, as well as its strategies, tactics and diverse methods of recruitment. He traces the Salafi-jihadi lineage of IS, its ideological differences with al-Qa'ida and the deadly rivalry that has emerged between their leaders. Atwan also shows how the group's rapid growth has been facilitated by its masterful command of social media platforms, the 'dark web', Hollywood 'blockbuster'-style videos, and even jihadi computer games, producing a powerful paradox where the ambitions of the Middle Ages have re-emerged in cyber-space.As Islamic State continues to dominate the world's media headlines with horrific acts of ruthless violence, Atwan considers the movement's chances of survival and expansion, and offers indispensable insights on potential government responses to contain the IS threat.

Review
'This is a brave and important book. It lifts the lid on how Islamic State combines an ideology of 1,000 years ago with the use of 21st century information technology to spread its messages. If you want to understand what motivates those prepared to behead hostages and post the results on the internet, then this book is a must-read.' Gavin Esler; 'Abdel Bari Atwan is one of the leading analysts in the world on the modern Middle East. In his new book on ISIS he delivers a uniquely informed, crisply argued and excellent account of the world's most powerful terrorist organization.' Peter Bergen, author of Manhunt: The Ten-Year Search for bin Laden from 9/11 to Abbottabad; 'Thank heavens we have writers such as Atwan - who knew the real Bin Laden better than any other journalist' Robert Fisk, Independent; 'An extraordinarily gifted, experienced and knowledgeable analyst of Arab affairs' Ann Leslie, Daily Mail; 'In this comprehensive and well-researched book, Abdel Bari Atwan, perhaps one of the Arab world's most distinguished commentators, has thrown considerable light on the IS phenomenon, explaining its origins, leadership and organisation ... Atwan's unique contribution is the detail he provides relating to the use of digital technology ... This outstanding book tells us how it all started.' Business Standard; 'Middle East expert Abdel Bari Atwan explains exactly how IS propagandists and recruiters use the necromancy of the "dark web" to overcome our attempts to stop them.' Hugh Prysor-Jones, The Tablet

scarily informative
By Mr. D. P. Jay
Most of what we know is from anti-Islam media so it’s good to have a book written by someone who knows what he is talking about.
Abdel Bari Atwan was Editor-in-Chief of London-based daily al-Quds al-Arabi for 25 years. Atwan twice interviewed Osama bin Laden and has cultivated uniquely well-placed sources from within the various branches of al-Qa‘ida and other jihadi groups over the last fifteen years.
Just as the Protestant reformation was able to spread rapidly because of the invention of printing, so ISIS is able to spreads because of tech-savy young people who can encrypt, hack etc.
It is just 10 years since the video-sharing site YouTube was created, transforming the world of social media. IS and its forerunner organisations have shown themselves adept at using the whole panoply of digital and social media. Atwan says it is paradoxical that a group which aims to take the world back to the days of the “Righteous Caliphs” – the first generations of Muslims –should be so dependent on the most sophisticated and modern technology. "But in war people use every weapon at their disposal", and the leaders and foot soldiers of IS are 21st century men who have been brought up with computers, mobile phones and social networking platforms as part of their natural environment.
A pioneer in the use of digital technology to record jihadi operations and spread videos with a jihadist message was the Jordanian Abu Musab Zarqawi, who became Al-Qa’ida’s emir in Iraq. Zarqawi also led the way in the kind of gruesome violence now characteristic of IS. In May 2004 he personally beheaded 26-year-old American businessman Nick Berg, who was dressed in the type of orange jumpsuit similar to those of men in US custody. The video of Berg's murder caused shockwaves far beyond Iraq. Zarqawi was killed by the Americans in 2006, but his legacy remains. In a chilling sign of what is to befall them, a number of IS's captives or hostages have been dressed in orange jumpsuits for their videoed murders.
The American-born cleric Anwar al-Awlaki, who was prominent in Al-Qa’ida in the Arabian Peninsula until his death in a US drone attack of 2011, further developed the digital side of jihadism. He encouraged the use of social media such as blogs, Facebook and YouTube to disseminate jihadist material and indoctrinate (induct?) new recruits.
It’s quite clear that the aggression of the West laid the seeds for the rise of ISIS.
I know it is facetious but I thought of the anti-smoking lobby in the UK when I read that the Taliban punish smokers by cutting off their fingers.
He outlines the origin and emphases of the different groups, especially the Wahabis.
Unless the rest of the world unites in order to defeat IS or we talk to terrorists, the future looks very bleak indeed.

The author coherently explains what is going on with the highly organized and well-funded Islamist State and how it contrasts with the efforts of Al Quaeda which revolved mostly around the leadership of one man, Osama Bin Laden. The author gives great background on why this region has coalesced against the West in a determination to restore self-rule under the 18th Century puritanical ideology of Wahabism, and why they are utilizing savagery to gain recruits, adherents and to spread fear in an effort to sabotage economies in regions heavily subsidized by tourism. He also gives excellent advice on what is needed to restore a semblance of civility in what has more and more been recognized as essentially a civil war between Sunni and the Shiite religious authority. It is not through invasion, occupation and force of arms, but through education, and an understanding of the region's diversity of religious groups and how to assist them in living together as is done in the West, that will ultimately bring a sense of stability to this region. The use of social media which is instantaneous and easily accessed is now uniting adherents of an Islamic state, and the visceral imagery of terrorist attacks helps to spread their message of fear and intolerance.
